How many counties are in the United States?

You’ll find two answers — 3,143 and 3,144 — and both are defensible. The difference is Connecticut: through 2021 it had 8 counties, but effective 2022 the Census Bureau retired them and adopted the state’s 9 planning regions as county-equivalents.

Count the new regions and it’s 3,144; count the old counties and it’s 3,143. This atlas uses the current basis, so it says 3,144.
